Growing
- Invest in mulch cycling and depth to speed harvesting along with blocking heat and sun exposure to the roots.
- Easily water your carrot garden with our Melnor Oscillating Lawn Sprinklers.
- Water about ½ gallon per square foot to start and then up to 1 gallon per square foot as roots grow and strengthen.
- Fertilize diligently. Carrots like high-potassium and low-nitrogen fertilizer composition.
Harvesting
- By a general rule of thumb, more flavor is packed into smaller carrots. Consider this when making salads for the family.
- Harvesting can occur when desired size is accomplished but make sure carrots are at least 1 thumb in thickness.
- Carrots taste better after a frost, which causes them to save energy in the roots for when warmer temperatures come along, so it is wise to wait until the first frost of fall.
Storing
- Cut ½-1 inch of tops and clean briskly to remove dirt and debris from soil.
- Let air dry or use paper towels to lock in moisture and seal in plastic bag.
- Store in refrigerator for extended life. You can also store in buckets in cooler environments like a basement or garage if you have excess.
