The tea tree, also known as [Melaleuca alternifolia], is a plant native to Australia. Starting in South Wales and Queensland, this powerful tree began to grow in popularity as people discovered the benefits of what the leave’s oils can do. Many studies have been provided for the application of this oil for various medical illnesses, and it is even thought to aid with other concerns; however, additional studies are needed to determine efficacy.

For close to 100 years, this oil has been used as an ointment due to its amazing properties. Although, make sure not to consume this oil as it has proved poisonous.

Benefits for relief include:

  • Anti-bacterial – some research alludes to this oils ability to break down the cell walls of bacteria
  • Anti-inflammatory – containing the terpinene-4 compound, this oil is good for inflamed joints and aches
  • Anti-fungal – research has been completed that shows its ability to kill common yeast and other fungi-related infections that occur in the throat, genitals, and nails
  • Acne treatment
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Dandruff
  • Head lice
  • Oral health – compared with chlorhexidine antiseptic gel, tea tree oil showed “significant reduction” according to studies

Growing a Tea Tree

Start the tea tree indoors in a slightly larger container near direct sunlight. This will give the tree plenty of sun exposure that it needs but no windy drafts causing needle-drop or drying.

Water often and make sure to keep the soil moist. Never allow the soil to become dry to the touch and allow proper drainage with a holed pot.

Because Tea Trees are evergreens, there is no need to stop fertilizing which means you can fertilize year-round. Ensure that you prune and shape the branches so that the tree grows properly in its place until moving outside.

Dig a deep soil box so the tree has all the nutrients it needs. The roots tend to grow fast and big.

Water regularly until tree is 8-12 feet tall.
